Knights of the Shield is a fascinating police procedural with a spiritual twist, featuring a story which rises above the traditional cynical cop stories often portrayed in fiction. Jeff does a prodigious job weaving in a supernatural, spiritual influence. While I personally do not believe in any sort of god, his connections were certainly well drawn and it was interesting to find paranormal components in an excellent procedural.
The antagonist, the Ribbon Killer, who has moved on from killing eight ex-cons to killing regular people, didn’t know he was up against a cop who finally had the opportunity to redeem himself. The dialogs that our hero, Det. Luke Graham, has with God and a 1000-year-old knight named Richard were delightful and unique.
Granted, Luke Graham began as a cliché detective, preferring to work alone but forced to take on a newbie partner. However, that’s where the story takes on the special twist. Luke’s partner saves his life by breaking the rules and a spiritual visitor brings on a quest to redeem Luke’s soul. The Ribbon Killer keeps killing and Luke’s fears his girlfriend may be next.
Jeff’s storytelling skills make his debut novel sparkle. While Luke Graham starts as a standard hardboiled detective, it ends… Well, you owe it to yourself to read this gripping, fascinating novel.
To be entirely transparent, I must mention that Jeff was one of my best pupils in the Writing The Novel course I taught for ten years on America Online. While I gave him advice and some rudimentary skills, Jeff has most certainly provided the talent and writing ability, over which I cannot claim any assistance. Good one, Jeff!
Thank you Mr Crews!
